Windsor Castle is the final resting place of 10 of Britain’s 39 monarchs. Among them is Charles I—the only British sovereign ever tried and executed for treason. In 1649, following the English Civil War, he was beheaded outside Whitehall Palace, a moment that shook the monarchy to its core.
Today, Charles I lies in St George’s Chapel, sharing a tomb with Henry VIII and Henry’s beloved third wife, Jane Seymour. This chapel also houses the remains of other notable royals, including Edward IV, the founder of the Yorkist dynasty; Henry VI, whose death marked the end of the Wars of the Roses; Edward VII and his consort Queen Alexandra; and George V alongside Queen Mary, the grandparents of Queen Elizabeth II.
