As a student on summer break from university, it can be hard to find employment that is rewarding, has a strong focus on training and development and is flexible enough to allow time with friends and family. The Internship at Accommodation Windsor gave me all these benefits and more. The office is based just off Windsor High Street and the properties are all based in Windsor & Eton. It is this focus on the local area that allows the company to really specialize and help to train me with a hands-on approach. With the majority of properties a short walk away from the office this is a huge benefit to me as I’m not yet driving.
Coming into this internship I had hoped to gain skills in dealing with administrative functions and getting some practical experience in an office, as well as get first-hand insight into how property companies operate. I haven’t had to make one cup of tea yet and instead have been given jobs to assign keys, help manage arrivals and perform a variety of daily tasks that require me to use a range of skills. The jobs are challenging without being impossible, structured without being monotonous and most of all I genuinely feel a part of the team after just my first few shifts.
I’ve been able to visit a few properties that the company manages as well as Alma House Guest House that the company also owns and understand the set-up of a small business. The company believes in all staff understanding the whole process and for this reason I travelled with the Housekeeping team to clean a property in Eton which took me back to my days at primary school where we used to visit the college and its facilities. These nostalgic thoughts did help me tremendously in passing the time between cleaning the toilet bowl and hoovering the floor. Don’t tell my mum though, or she might make me start cleaning more regularly at home! I have also been tasked with researching products for use in all of Accommodation Windsor’s 60 properties – from coffee machines to clock radio alarms. I have presented my finding to the team and I’m actively involved in giving feedback on usage (especially the coffee machine!) The company is also looking at ways to be more environmentally friendly and I’m currently working on finding UK suppliers who provide eco-friendly products. My university skills are invaluable in finding, sorting through and presenting information to the Management team who have so far been really impressed with my input.
Internships can simply be a gateway to future employment, but here I have enjoyed the internship in its own right. The team are good fun but I am also learning when it is the right time to stop joking and get my head down with any work that comes my way – an invaluable skill for business.
Overall I would highly recommend the internship programme here at Accommodation Windsor Limited. An enjoyable and very useful internship in its own right, with a set up that is very organised, it has been an excellent peek behind the curtain into the post-university world for me and what the world of office work would be like. The only problem I have now is trying to remember not to answer my mobile “Good afternoon, Accommodation Windsor. How can I help?”
Its nearly six and a half years ago since I was offered an exciting career change with Accommodation Windsor Limited. Initially, I had contacted the company for help with short term accommodation whilst I searched for a job locally. Having spent time visiting friends, I had grown to love Windsor and was keen to relocate. Whilst I was on the website looking at the gorgeous apartments, I noticed the company was advertising for a Lettings Manager. A few days after submitting my CV, I was in the office being interviewed and was shown around a couple of fabulous properties that the company managed. Directors Nigel and Georgia took me out for lunch and over Tapas I was offered the job… I think Nigel had drunk his wine too quickly! Within the same week I found a great place to rent and all of a sudden my life was heading in a whole new direction.
Over the next few weeks, I had to learn as much as possible about Windsor & Eton and all of the Landlords and their properties so that I was well informed and able to match customers with the right accommodation to suit their needs. When I first started with the company we had around 25 properties, this has now more than doubled to a portfolio in excess of 60 – ranging from studios to 4-bed houses. It has been fantastic to be a part of Accommodation Windsor’s growth and see the company develop in every direction; from system development, an ever-expanding team and fabulous property improvements. Knowing that I have contributed to the growth of the business is also incredibly rewarding.
So whats next for Accommodation Windsor Limited? Well, with a refreshing approach to service that brings customers back to stay with us time and time again and with the exciting property improvements currently taking place, I can only envisage the company continuing to grow in an even more corporate, professional and fresh direction. Within the next year, we will take on new properties, we’ll need bigger offices and possibly a bigger team too. I think Accommodation Windsor is a great place to work and the Company is fun and innovative which is why we continue to grow year on year.
Poor old Ruby Tuesday, New boy Rads is driving her potty!
This Friday 21st March is National Puppy Day… as if we need a special day to celebrate our pampered pooches! Boo Radley is the latest member of our team having been recently recruited to assist Ruby Tuesday with Security Detail (mainly snoozing in the corner of the office…) Radley is driving his big sister a little bit potty by chasing her tail and stealing all her favourite toys but we’re sure she’ll have him whipped into shape in no time at all.
New boy Radley
Radley is a Dasher (Miniature Schnauzer and Dachshund cross.) Now 3 months old, Radley has had his jabs and is all signed up ready to start puppy training classes. He is super cute and can’t wait to start in his new role at Accommodation Windsor Limited (probably) 🙂
Back in July 2013, I came to Windsor for a job interview. Coming from Hungary and having lived only in London, I hadn’t heard of Windsor before so I did some internet research about the town prior to the big day. I read about the attractions, the restaurants, the social life, the transport and from every angle Windsor seemed a great place to live. However, back then I was more worried about getting the job and not so much about the town. So when I got off the train at Central Station on the day of the interview, my thoughts were focussed around the upcoming questions and I wasn’t thinking about the town too much. And yet as I stepped off the train I was amazed.
“How can a train station be so charming? And if the train station is so lovely what should I expect from the town?”
As I left the station I was impressed by Windsor Castle, the charming cobbled streets and shops, by the happy, relaxed people all around me. I loved every little detail: the River Thames, the Windsor Bridge, Peascod Street, the narrow alleyways and Alexandra Gardens. I had a feeling that I had found the perfect place to live! I was so surprised I couldn’t read the map properly (most unlike me) so I had to ask for help to find the way to my interview at Alma House.
Luckily for me it went really well and I was offered the job and asked to move in on the same day. Since then I have learnt more about the town and I still think Windsor is the greatest place to live.
It was love at first sight!
My role at at the company is very varied; I do a fair bit of cleaning of really fantastic apartments as well as maintenance jobs and looking after guests if they need anything out of office hours. This means I work closely with all of my colleagues from Housekeeping, Maintenance and in the Office too, not just from one Department. The most exciting parts of my job are that I always can improve my English, learn something new and meet new people every day. I love to chat with guests about their travelling, impressions of Windsor or our Bed & Breakfast. A fresh pair of eyes is always helpful and it’s great to share stories and places to visit in this wonderful town.
Recently the team at Accommodation Windsor enjoyed a taste of Hollywood during the making of our first ever Meet the Team video filmed and edited by Sam Taylor, the winner of our recent video competition “Destination Windsor”. We started with an initial brain-storming session, which got us all buzzing with ideas. After this, we decided to introduce each member of staff by giving a small glimpse of what they do each day, for me this meant a lot of answering the phone, greeting people at the door, doing check-ins and check-outs and taking payments. It was tiring work but also a lot of fun which reflects exactly what a normal day at Accommodation Windsor Limited is really like.
It was tricky to get all our ideas into such a short, two and a half minute video. We wanted to show all aspects of what we do at work including taking bookings, checking in guests, fighting our way through a mountain of paper work, meeting landlords and purchasing fabulous home furnishings. Luckily a number of our landlords are also close friends so were happy to help to get stuck in with the filming.
The completed video will be shown to the world via our website and various social media sites. It was therefore not surprising then that we all came to work on the first day of filming looking our absolute best! The team at Accommodation Windsor Limited have never looked so glamorous. The filming itself lasted just a few days and was a lot of fun and turned into a great team-building exercise. The Meet the Team video is a great way to show potential clients, Landlords and guests how we work together and what kind of a company we are. We recently used the video to advertise a job vacancy and had such a positive response from candidates who all felt we would be a great company to work for!
Working with Sam on this video has been a pleasure for all of us, he has a very professional and creative attitude which filled us all with energy and enthusiasm. We cant wait to see the rest of the videos he will be creating for us in the future which will feature a number of our apartments as well as videos on where to eat, drink and shop in Windsor.
