Pancake Day Recipe

Posted: Tue 4 March 2014 at 09:47

pancakesCan’t believe it is Pancake Day again already, or is that just because we love pancakes so much we eat them all year round?  Even the kids can flip with confidence…. 🙂

Nigel’s favourite Dairy and Gluten-free recipe below:-

  • 125g Plain Gluten-free flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 275ml Dairy free Milk (we use Koko milk)
  • Dash of salt

Sieve together the flour and salt.  Make a well in the flour and add the eggs, stir well.  Gradually add half the milk, beat thoroughly for 4 mins.  Stir in remaining milk and beat lightly.  You don’t need to leave batter to stand, but if you do, beat again before using.  Heat up a small frying pan until really hot and add a knob of goat’s butter.  Pour mixture into pan and tip to cover surface.  Cook until underside is golden brown and top covered in bubbles.  Flip the pan to cook pancake on the other side.  Slide pancake onto a plate and serve with your favourite filling – go classic with a twist; sugar, lemon and add raspberries and strawberries and a small spoonful of ice-cream for a delicious dessert.

Working in Windsor

Posted: Thu 3 October 2013 at 11:48

David BurianBack in July 2013, I came to Windsor for a job interview.  Coming from Hungary and having lived only in London, I hadn’t heard of Windsor before so I did some internet research about the town prior to the big day.  I read about the attractions, the restaurants, the social life, the transport and from every angle Windsor seemed a great place to live.  However, back then I was more worried about getting the job and not so much about the town.  So when I got off the train at Central Station on the day of the interview, my thoughts were focussed around the upcoming questions and I wasn’t thinking about the town too much.  And yet as I stepped off the train I was amazed.

“How can a train station be so charming? And if the train station is so lovely what should I expect from the town?”

As I left the station I was impressed by Windsor Castle, the charming cobbled streets and shops, by the happy, relaxed people all around me. I loved every little detail: the River Thames, the Windsor Bridge, Peascod Street, the narrow alleyways and Alexandra Gardens. I had a feeling that I had found the perfect place to live! I was so surprised I couldn’t read the map properly (most unlike me) so I had to ask for help to find the way to my interview at Alma House.

Luckily for me it went really well and I was offered the job and asked to move in on the same day.  Since then I have learnt more about the town and I still think Windsor is the greatest place to live.

It was love at first sight!

My role at at the company is very varied; I do a fair bit of cleaning of really fantastic apartments as well as maintenance jobs and looking after guests if they need anything out of office hours. This means I work closely with all of my colleagues from Housekeeping, Maintenance and in the Office too, not just from one Department.  The most exciting parts of my job are that I always can improve my English, learn something new and meet new people every day.  I love to chat with guests about their travelling, impressions of Windsor or our Bed & Breakfast.  A fresh pair of eyes is always helpful and it’s great to share stories and places to visit in this wonderful town.

National Trust Days Out

Cliveden Parterre

Following the mantra that there is no such thing as bad weather… only inappropriate clothing, some of our best days out with the kids have been to National Trust properties. With beautiful gardens, wonderful cafes (often serving home-grown produce) and play trails / adventure areas for the kids, it’s a great opportunity to get the whole family outdoors. Educational too, with fantastic historical properties, although the kids usually groan when we suggest going inside the houses they always find something interesting to look at from Tudor bedrooms slept in by Kings and Queens  to Victorian kitchens (…and a promise to swing by the sweet counter at the NT shop usually helps.)

Sometimes we’ll meet up with a crowd; it’s fun for the kids to dress up and do the mazes and trails with their friends or cousins. On these occasions we tend to take picnics as a big crowd with kids can be overpowering for other diners as well as frazzling for parents, but often if it’s just the four of us, we’ll grab something to eat in the delightful cafes and restaurants. Whenever we travel in the UK, we’ll find a National Trust place to stop and recharge our batteries at a half way point. The properties are everywhere and much nicer than stopping at a motorway cafe (sorry Heston!) After a couple of hours in the car, a stroll around stunning gardens letting the kids run off pent-up energy is just what we need and as we visit regularly, the Family Membership is excellent value for money at under £100 per year (see link for special new member deals).

Throughout the year there are a host of additional activities and especially during the summer months, there is outdoor theatre, live music, guided DSC_3846walks and afternoon teas – booking essential. We’re spoilt with Cliveden in Burnham Beeches, Basildon Park near Pangbourne and the Vyne in Basingstoke all on Windsor’s doorstep, but if you’re travelling further afield there are hundreds of place to visit.

Happy Pancake Valentines Day

Happy Valentine's Day by Joebelle
Happy Valentine’s Day, a photo by Joebelle on Flickr.

Double celebration this week involving huge quantities of pancakes (with sugar and lemon of course) and hopefully some lovely chocolates (jewellery…!?) and flowers. Should cheer us all up a bit anyway – February much better than January where we’re all desperately trying to lose a few exta pounds and not spend any money from our Xmas excesses. Enough time has passed – it’s official, today is the perfect excuse to have yourself a naughty pudding and get to the shops for a special treat for loved ones. Don’t forget the lemons on the way home, and Happy Flipping…!!

AWL CHRISTMAS PARTY

xmas-staff-2012

Last week AWL celebrated the Christmas Season in style with a bash for staff and friends at owners Nigel and Georgia’s home.  As usual, the idea was to get some great photos for our Christmas E-card and then donate the money that would have been spent on printing cards to a worthwhile cause.

As is becoming the tradition, the team get right into the spirit of the party with their sparkliest outfits and a great sense of fun.  You can see a collection of the best pics   with many thanks to Bob Stapleton for coming along and taking the photos for us.

Jimmy Higham

This year we are donating to the Jimmy Higham Bursury Trust.  You may have heard his single “Isn’t She Lovely” which is currently riding high in the download charts.  Jimmy was a much loved teacher at Wellington College who sadly lost his battle with Cancer this time last year aged just 26.  He had a beautfiul voice and a university friend decided to posthumously release this track in his memory.  The kids at the school are trying to get it to number 1 with all monies raised going to a bursury fund.  The bursary will allow 16 year olds to spend their last two years at the college with its excellent facilities – giving them a life changing opportunity.  You can download Jimmy’s single here for just 79p:-

We would like to say many thanks to the whole team for such a great evening and wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and wonderful New Year.
